Toronto Maple Leafs captain Auston Matthews just did something with the Leafs that only Mats Sundin was able to accomplish, and soon, Matthews will stand alone.
Tonight, Maple Leafs captain Auston Matthews had an opportunity to tie and surpass Mats Sundin for the most goals in franchise history.
Going into the game, Matthews had 419 goals, and Sundin had 420. Moments ago, Matthews got his 420th goal and has officially tied the record.
UPDATE: Since our original report, Auston Matthews has gone on to break Mats Sundin's record by scoring his second goal of the game.
It was an incredible moment for Matthews, who now stands alone as the best goal-scorer in the history of the Toronto Maple Leafs franchise.
Now, the forward has 421 career goals, and he can finally stake his claim as the Greatest Leafs Player of All Time.
What is particularly special for Matthews and the Leafs right now is the fact that the captain has five goals in the last two games.
His hat trick against the Winnipeg Jets was huge, and now, there is a chance we get to see Matthews truly reach his heights from 2023-24.
Leafs fans have been waiting a long time for this version of Matthews to re-emerge, and now, he appears to be back, which could mean good luck.
At the time of writing this, the Toronto Maple Leafs are beating the New York Islanders by a score of 2-1 after the second period.
Whether or not the Leafs can hold onto this lead and win the game, is something that still very much remains to be seen.
