Toronto Maple Leafs rookie Easton Cowan has been a stud this season, although the Maple Leafs almost gave him away to the St. Louis Blues.

Easton Cowan is a rookie who is still trying to find himself in the NHL. Leafs head coach Craig Berube has scratched him a bunch, but he has still managed to play 31 games.
During that time, he has 12 points, and he is finally starting to get his rhythm going alongside Nicolas Roy and Nick Robertson on the third line.
Prior to his rookie season, the Leafs were actively shopping him, as they were desperate for a center, and teams knew what they could get in return for that.
Cowan was on the menu, and according to new reporting from Nick Kypreos, Easton Cowan was almost sent to the St. Louis Blues.

Easton Cowan for Brayden Schenn

If you remember, the Maple Leafs really wanted Brayden Schenn on the roster. He had ties to Berube, and there was a feeling that something could get done.
As Kypreos explains, the Leafs wanted to offer up Cowan. However, in the end, Schenn refused to waive his no-movement clause.
Last year, Easton Cowan was pushed as a trade chip in an effort to try and obtain Brayden Schenn, but Cowan's going to be hard to put into play again this season. One idea floating around the league is a bigger swing involving Dallas - specifically Jason Robertson.
This season, Cowan appears to be back in play, albeit for Jason Robertson of the Dallas Stars. While a deal is unlikely, Leafs general manager Brad Treliving is willing to do anything to get a first-line winger.
Thankfully, the Schenn trade never went through, as it would have been a disaster. Schenn has 18 points in 44 games this season, and over the long haul, Cowan is shaping up to be the better player.
For now, fans will just have to wait and see what the Leafs end up doing here. If one thing is for certain, it is that the next few months are going to be fascinating.
