Brad Treliving Bends the NHL's Rules with Elaborate Plan Involving Easton Cowan & Jacob Quillan
With the Toronto Maple Leafs experiencing some salary cap issues, the team has opted to keep Jacob Quillan over Easton Cowan, but there is a catch here.
Yesterday evening, the Toronto Maple Leafs revealed that Jacob Quillan would be on the Toronto Maple Leafs roster, while Easton Cowan would be sent down to the AHL.
Overall, it was a bit of a surprise. At the end of the day, Cowan had a lot more reps during the preseason, and he was easily the more impressive player.
However, as it turns out, this is all part of a master plan that Brad Treliving has been cooking up with the goal of bending the NHL's salary cap and LTIR rules.

According to Chris Johnston of TSN and The Athletic, putting Quillan on the team instead of Cowan gives the team a pathway to placing Marshall Rifai on LTIR.
This helps give the team more flexibility with the salary cap. Furthermore, they can also put Scott Laughton on LTIR if they really need to.
Further to the #leafs keeping Jacob Quillan on the season-opening roster while assigning Easton Cowan to the AHL:
This sets them up to put Marshall Rifai on LTIR tomorrow and create a good LTIR capture, should they need it this season

It should be noted that this season, a playoff salary cap has been implemented to stop teams from taking advantage of LTIR as a means of accruing cap space.
Regardless, Treliving clearly has a plan in place, and this is all in service of improving the team over the long haul.
Unfortunately, we won't be able to see Easton Cowan early on this season. Hopefully, he is able to prove his worth with the Toronto Marlies.
No matter what, Leafs fans are going to be paying attention, as the regular season kicks off tomorrow against the Montreal Canadiens.
