Cale Makar's injury leaves Jared Bednar with a real late-season problem as Colorado tries to get its blue line through the stretch run.

The first update did calm things down a bit. Pierre LeBrun reported Makar is not believed to be dealing with anything too serious, but he will likely miss a few games to get back to 100 percent before the playoffs.
"On Cale Makar, don’t believe it’s too serious but he will likely miss a few games in order to get him to 100 percent before the playoffs."
That still changes the picture for the Avalanche right away. When your No. 1 defenseman comes out of a 9-2 win and the word “few” enters the conversation, the lineup stops feeling automatic.
Bednar now has to manage two jobs at once. He has to protect Makar for April while also keeping the team sharp enough to carry momentum into the first round.
That's why this is bigger than a day-to-day note. Colorado can survive a short absence, but it does force a different workload on the rest of the blue line and it puts more stress on every matchup.
The timing matters too. The Avalanche have only 9 games left, which means every missed night now lands inside a playoff dress rehearsal.

Makar's absence could sharpen the roster debate

This is where the bigger league question comes into view. NHL teams can carry 23 players on the roster, but only 20 dress on game night, and that squeeze feels tighter when a star goes down this late.
For Colorado, that setup can leave very little room to breathe. One injury on the back end can turn a stable pair structure into a night-by-night patch job.
That's also why calls for extra game-day flexibility make some sense in the final month. An added skater would not erase the loss of Makar, but it would give coaches another option before they start overloading their top guys.
The Avalanche are built around stars, and nobody is pretending otherwise. But this is exactly the point in the calendar when a club wants fewer emergency minutes and more controlled usage.
It also opens the door for depth defenders to grab a larger role. Bednar may not want a full shuffle, though he could need one if Makar is held out longer than expected.
And once that happens, the ripple reaches every pair. Zone exits, power-play touches, and late-game matchup decisions all get tighter when the best puck-moving defenseman is out.
Colorado still got the encouraging part of the news first: this does not look like a major issue. But even a short break for Cale Makar is enough to test Jared Bednar's lineup management at the worst possible time.
