Elliotte Friedman Drops a Bombshell Regarding Auston Matthews
Toronto Maple Leafs captain Auston Matthews has been dealing with an injury all season long and Elliotte Friedman seems to have an update on the superstar.
Auston Matthews is one of the best players in the league his goal-scoring has been cut significantly this season due to injuries.
There is no guarantee that he even hits 30 goals this season which is a huge disappointment for a guy who had 69 goals last campaign.
Having said that, there are now questions about whether or not Matthews should even be playing and if the Leafs are making a mistake by letting him on the ice.
Elliotte Friedman on Auston Matthews
In new report from Elliotte Friedman on 32 Thoughts, it was revealed that Matthews is seemingly only pushing through because he is trying to show the team what a leader he is.
However, this could be working against him because of his poor play on the ice, which is the opposite of leading by example.
Per Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet:
"There's no question now -- I think the biggest thing that everyone's looking at Toronto is Matthews. And he's missed time this year. Of course, he went overseas, went to Germany to get looked at.
He missed that one game during the 4 Nations... You can sense that Matthews, as captain -- this is my guess -- whatever he's dealing with, he wants to show that he can push his way through it, or deal with it as best he can while he's in the lineup...
I think he sees it as leadership by example, push his way through... But it's clear that he's bothered by something and wants to attack it the way he feels a captain should, which is to play his way through it."

Whatever the case may be, the Toronto Maple Leafs have a lot to figure out right now, and the situation with their captain is part of that.
If things keep going this way, then there is going to be a lot of angry Leafs fans who will have every reason to be upset.
Only time will tell whether or not the team gets it together and Matthews is able to get over this injury situation.
