Ex-Toronto Maple Leafs CEO Indicted on Major Charges

Many Maple Leafs fans probably remember Tim Leiweke from the days in which the franchise wasn't very good. It was the Leiweke years that eventually set the Leafs up to get Auston Matthews in 2016.

From 2013 to 2015, Leiweke replaced retiring CEO Richard Peddie over at MLSE. His time with the club was bried, and quite frankly, not very memorable.

However, the former CEO is now in quite a bit of trouble with the law thanks to allegations of bid rigging from the FBI. On Wednesday, he was even indicted in a Texas court.

According to reports, Leiweke was allegedly diverting contracts to his company Oak View Group which was founded years ago. The company is in charge of overseeing large arena projects throughout North America, and he is being accused of rigging bids in favor Oak View Group.

The project that alerted the authorities had to do with an arena being built at the University of Texas at Austin. Leiweke is being alleged of striking a deal with a rival firm to stand down from their bid.

As compensation, Leiweke would allegedly give the other company subcontracts. This is illegal, and the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Texas is letting him know about it.

In the aftermath of all of this, Leiweke has stepped down from the Oak View Group, which isn't exactly surprising.

He has yet to make an official statement on the matter. As for the Toronto Maple Leafs, they have nothing to do with this.

Overall, this is a scandal that will take months and perhaps even years to fully resolve itself.
