Hurricanes forward slapped with NHL's max punishment after costly mistake
Seth Jarvis got hit with the NHL's maximum $5,000 fine, and it lands after a rough Carolina Hurricanes loss that already felt like a warning shot.
The league announced the punishment on March 18 for high-sticking Conor Garland.
Jarvis is not some fringe piece on this roster. He has 27 goals and 25 assists for 52 points in 55 games, and Carolina leans hard on his pace in the top-six.
That is why this fine feels bigger than five grand. When one of your drivers loses control for a shift, the whole game can tilt fast.
The clip tells the story, sharp and ugly, with Jarvis' stick riding up into Garland's face during the play.
Carolina had a messy night in Columbus, and Jarvis wore a big chunk of it. He took two double-minor high-sticking penalties, and the first one helped open the door for the Jackets.
The Hurricanes are still 42-19-6 and sitting near the top of the Metro. That record is strong enough to hide one bad night, but not a trend.
Seth Jarvis puts pressure on the Carolina Hurricanes
Fans can live with edge. They hate preventable mistakes that hand the other side power-play life.
Jarvis usually plays with jump, detail, and clean reads off the rush. This time, Carolina got the bad version, and it fed the kind of chaos coaches spend March trying to kill.
That ripple matters now. Rod Brind'Amour can stomach emotion, but he will not stomach sloppiness from a winger who plays big minutes in all situations.
The money itself is nothing to an NHL regular. The message is the real damage.
Carolina's man advantage and forecheck look a lot better when Jarvis is attacking inside lanes instead of chasing a whistle. That is the fix, and it has to come fast.
He is still one of the club's most important forwards. But this fine turns his next game into a response game, and those are the nights contenders remember.
