Toronto Maple Leafs center John Tavares is making headlines today but not for reasons you would expect, as he is touting an amulet that he claims has magical properties.
No, you did not read that incorrectly. The former captain of the Toronto Maple Leafs actually has an amulet that he says has several beneficial properties including faster recovery from injuries and wifi protection, whatever that even means. The Amulet, produced by a company called Aires tech, and backed by comedian and actor Russel Brand, supposedly protects users from EMF radiation that comes from electronic devices, such as phones with 5G internet access. From the Aires Tech website:
"Shield yourself from the harmful effects of EMF radiation emitted by modern technology. No hoaxes and gimmicks. Just 100% science.
Aires Lifetune protects you from radiation that results in free radicals that damage your body.
Silicon resonator chip negates EMF radiation present in your surroundings without damaging your tech.
Aires Lifetune series shields you from harmful EMF radiation emitted by 5G, phones, and appliances."
Apparently, John Tavares has been an Aires Tech amulet user for several years and has even reached out to the company in an effort to establish an official role as a brand ambassador.
Honestly though, buying into magical amulets does not feel like a very captain-like move anyways. After all, he is supposed to be a beacon of reason and leadership in the locker room, not a used car salesman. Even Leafs fans have had a field day making jokes at his expense in this case.
This was certainly not a story anyone had on their radar coming into this season, but it is nice to have a little fun with goofy stuff like this every once in awhile. Hopefully, Tavares will be asked to speak about this more in depth soon so we can hear his side of the story.
