Luke Hughes is done for the year after Sheldon Keefe shut him down, even as the young defenseman was playing through a lingering injury.

That's the part that changes the read.

Hughes wasn't fading out. He was pushing through it.

And still producing.

He wrapped up his season with 35 points in 68 games, holding a key role on both the blue line and the power play.

That matters, because this wasn't a cold stretch decision.

This was a medical call meeting a standings reality.

The Devils sit at 83 points in 78 games, and the window to climb back in is basically closed.

Keefe had been leaning on Hughes heavily, especially in transition and offensive zone entries from the back end.

Even with the injury, he stayed in the mix.

That says a lot about how the staff viewed his impact.

But there's a line.

And once you cross into procedure territory, the risk flips.

New Jersey already carries a -20 goal differential, and pushing a top young defenseman through pain for a long-shot run doesn't fit the bigger plan.

So they pulled him.

That's not ideal late in the year.

But neither is losing Hughes for next season.
