MacKenzie Weegar is officially heading to the Utah Mammoth. Head coach Andre Tourigny just got a massive upgrade for his blue line down the stretch.
The veteran defenseman had to sign off on this blockbuster deal. His contract carries a strict no-trade clause, but the appeal of a deep playoff run ultimately changed his mind.
Calgary gets a fascinating return for the 32-year-old blueliner. The total package includes Olli Maatta, prospect Jonathan Castagna, and three 2026 second-round picks.
Many around the league assumed the Flames would demand a first-round pick. Settling for a trio of second-rounders is a calculated risk by the front office.
Weegar brings a $6.25 million cap hit that runs through the 2030-31 season. He adds immediate stability and heavy minutes to a defensive core that desperately needed veteran depth.
Over his NHL career, Weegar has consistently driven the transition game. He posted 15 points in his last 32 games while playing exceptionally tough minutes in Calgary.
Utah needed this type of physical presence on the right side. And Tourigny will likely rely on his crisp passing to spark their breakout from the defensive zone.
The Return for Calgary
Bringing in Maatta gives Calgary an established NHL body to eat up remaining minutes. The 31-year-old carries a $3.5 million cap hit for two more seasons.
Maatta is not going to light up the scoreboard on most nights. He brings solid execution on the penalty kill and blocks shots at a noticeably high rate.
Castagna is the true wildcard in this transaction. The 20-year-old forward is currently playing at Cornell University and putting up very respectable numbers in the NCAA.
Drafted 70th overall back in 2023, Castagna brings size and a heavy forecheck. He registered 25 points during his freshman campaign and continues to develop his offensive output.
But the draft capital is the true centerpiece for a rebuilding Flames roster. Three extra picks in the second round of the 2026 draft provides serious leverage.
Calgary can use those assets to package a move up the draft board. Or they simply take three heavy swings at adding high-end talent to their prospect pool.
Utah is pushing their chips to the middle of the table for a postseason run. Adding a top-pairing defenseman without surrendering a first-round pick is highly efficient asset management.
Weegar should slide right into the top four by Thursday night. The Mammoth are built to win right now, and this trade officially cements their status as serious contenders.
