Toronto Maple Leafs captain Auston Matthews dealt with numerous injuries last season, and it appears as though this has led to a change in his physique.

Auston Matthews is one of the best players in the National Hockey League, although last season, he had a bit of a hiccup as he just wasn't the guy fans know him to be.
Instead of scoring 69 goals like he did the season before, he ended up with just 33. Of course, a lot of this had to do with the nagging injury he faced throughout the season.
Going into the 2025-26 campaign, much has been made about Auston Matthews' health and whether or not he can get back to 100 percent, once and for all.

Auston Matthews is looking to avoid injuries

According to Matthews himself, his health is just fine, and he is happy with where he is right now. Needless to say, good news that fans can celebrate.
However, head coach Craig Berube is taking things a step further. While speaking to The Athletic, Craig Berube revealed that Matthews has made a huge change to his physique.
As a means of staying healthy this season, the captain has opted to put on a few pounds. By doing so, he believes he can be the healthiest version of himself.
He mentioned Matthews had put a little weight on and had talked about maybe he thought he was a little too lean last year (which might've contributed to the injuries)

Says Matthews feels stronger and a lot healthier

For now, it still remains to be seen whether or not Auston Matthews is going to have the season that fans have been hoping for.
Without Mitch Marner, it will be tough for him to get back above 50 goals. However, if he makes it happen, then the Leafs are in for a very good season.
With the NHL season set to start in a few weeks, there is no doubt that Leafs fans have a lot to look forward to.
