Toronto Maple Leafs winger William Nylander was recently placed on the injured reserve, although there appears to be an ulterior motive for this move.

William Nylander remains one of the best players on the Toronto Maple Leafs. In fact, when he puts together maximum effort, he is one of the best players in the league.
Unfortunately, the forward has been out of the lineup since December 27th with a lower-body injury, which landed him on the injured reserve on Monday.
This news was not good for Leafs fans, who were hoping to see Nylander back in the lineup on Tuesday for a grudge match against the Florida Panthers.
However, it appears as though there is actually some good news as it pertains to Nylander, and the injury reserve situation is more than meets the eye.

Maple Leafs explain William Nylander's situation

According to Lance Hornby, Nylander was only placed on the injured reserve because the team wanted to call up defenseman Marshall Rifai.
Simply put, this maneuver was purely for roster management. In fact, the team fully expects Nylander to be back in the lineup soon, although they won't put a timeline on it.
Overall, the Maple Leafs have dealt with plenty of injuries this season, and there is no denying that they need a bit of relief right now, given how Chris Tanev, Brandon Carlo, Jake McCabe, and Anthony Stolarz are all injured.

A long week ahead for the Maple Leafs

The Toronto Maple Leafs are playing the Florida Panthers tonight, before traveling to Philadelphia on Thursday for a date with the Flyers.
Subsequently, the Leafs get to play the Vancouver Canucks at home for Hockey Night in Canada. On Monday next week, they play the Colorado Avalanche.
With some important games coming up, there is no denying that the Leafs could use Nylander now, more than ever.
