Last night was a horrifying one for NHL referee Chris Rooney who was in charge of Game 7 between the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Florida Panthers.
At the beginning of the second period, Rooney was hit by a high stick, very close to his eye. In fact, he was bleeding so much that the ice had to be cleaned up.
This led to a swift referee change, and the game continued. However, in the interim, fans have been hoping for good news on Rooney's health.
Well, thankfully, we got that good news this morning courtesy of Pierre LeBrun, who revealed that Rooney is doing alright. He got stitches and even has a black eye. However, there is no eye damage.
Update on veteran ref Chris Rooney who left Game 7 last night in Toronto after taking a stick on a follow through. Scary incident. Has a black eye but luckily no eye damage. Hopes to be back working later this round. Good news it wasn't worse.
Rooney wants to come back in time for the Conference Finals. Of course, the NHL final four is set with the Edmonton Oilers, Dallas Stars, Florida Panthers, and Carolina Hurricanes moving on.
This is going to be a lot of fun, however, Toronto Maple Leafs fans are upset that the team fell short all over again.
Moreover, some fans are worried that we will get a rematch of the Oilers and Panthers Stanley Cup Final from last season, which wouldn't be nearly as interesting.
Either way, we hope Rooney is okay and that he gets to work again in these playoffs very soon.
What happened was scary to see, but credit to the medical staff for attending to him so quickly and making sure that he was okay.
