There appears to be a lot of buzz surrounding the Toronto Maple Leafs right now as a trade could be imminent.
The Maple Leafs completely collapsed once again on Saturday, dropping their third straight contest coming directly out of the lengthy Olympic break.
Saturday night's intense provincial clash against the Ottawa Senators was initially viewed as an absolute must-win spot to regain their footing in the Eastern Conference standings before it was too late.
The tense atmosphere inside Scotiabank Arena quickly morphed into a massive high-stakes showcase for rival hockey executives pacing the press box.
Terry Koshan reported that a staggering 12 different NHL clubs had representatives formally credentialed for this heavyweight Atlantic Division matchup, 14 scouts in all.
Having exactly a dozen opposing scouting departments evaluating talent in one building just six days out from the trade deadline is impossible to ignore.
The Deadline Approaches
The official attendance sheet featured front-office brass from the Sabres, Hurricanes, Blue Jackets, Red Wings, Oilers, Panthers, Islanders, Flyers, Lightning, and Utah Hockey Club.
But those 10 distinct organizations are clearly hunting for specific deadline upgrades, while two Western Conference contenders took their live evaluation process to another level.
Both the Dallas Stars and Los Angeles Kings purposefully dispatched two scouts each to get a comprehensive live look at Saturday's on-ice product.
Committing double the manpower to a single regular-season matchup usually means a general manager is demanding final confirmation on a specific trade target.
Could this mean that a deal for Bobby McMann, Oliver Ekman-Larsson, or Scott Laughton is already being arranged?
At the very least, it implies that the baseline framework for a significant transaction is actively being negotiated by these front offices.
The immediate assumption among the panicked fanbase is that these rival executives are actively circling the struggling Maple Leafs roster.
Because Toronto boasts obvious high-end trade bait, management desperately needs to alter the chemistry of a locker room currently stuck in a brutal 3-game losing streak.
Hockey fans cannot blindly ignore the young, hungry team standing on the other side of the center ice red line.
Those aggressive scouts could easily be targeting affordable physical depth pieces on the Ottawa Senators roster to load up for a grueling Stanley Cup playoff run.
