Tensions were high at the end of the final group stage game for Team Canada and Team France at the Olympics, where Tom Wilson got into a fight with Pierre Cronin, which is not allowed under the Olympic rulebook.
Wilson was defending teammate Nathan MacKinnon after receiving a hit to head, both players were not suspended by the IOC but Cronin was kicked off of France by his own federation.
Tom Wilson defends his actions against France.
Luke Fox posted on X, Wilson's comments regarding the situation with Cronin, he claims it's part of the game and he was just defending his teammate. It's normal for tensions to run high in hockey, and despite the rulebook these things happen.
Tom Wilson: “Stick up for my teammates and our country. It’s hockey. It's the greatest sport for a reason. Tensions get high. There’s a lot of emotion. And whatever happens out there happens.” 🇨🇦
Wilson has been praised by some, and scrutinized by others, on the one hand he stepped up for his teammate, on the other he got into a fight in a 10-2 game, and the violated the rules.
Wilson has not shied away from controversy in the past, he lives right on the edge of what is accepted and what is considered reckless.
But more often than not, Wilson provides a lot for his team, whether it is through scoring or physicality. So far this tournament he has a point a game, and his physicality is definitely present.
Team Canada will need him more than ever as they advance through the tournament, and play more physical teams.
