Tonight, the Toronto Maple Leafs are playing the Philadelphia Flyers, and while they are getting Chris Tanev back, there is one player who got some bad news.
Chris Tanev has been out for a couple of weeks now with a concussion, and there has been a hope that he would be back in the lineup soon.
Philippe Myers has been taking Tanev's place, while Dakota Mermis has been the seventh defenseman. In fact, Mermis got to play a game while Morgan Rielly was away.
Unfortunately, Mermis was not very good in his outing, and it had some wondering whether or not he deserved to be an NHL defenseman.

Tonight, the Leafs play the Philadelphia Flyers, and it would appear as though Tanev is officially ready to return to the lineup.
According to Leafs PR on X, the Maple Leafs have activated Tanev from the injured reserve. They have also sent Mermis back down to the Toronto Marlies.
This is certainly going to be disappointing news for Mermis, although it is certainly something that he was probably expecting.
At the end of the day, the Maple Leafs need the best players available, especially amidst this recent losing skid.
With that in mind, it makes sense that Mermis would be sent down. Whether or not he gets another opportunity with the Leafs this season remains to be seen.
As for Tanev, it is good to have him back, as he is truly the backbone of this Maple Leafs defense.
If the Leafs can stay healthy, then perhaps they can get themselves out of this bad stretch of hockey.
