Toronto Maple Leafs Get Devastating News Concerning One of Their Top Free Agency Targets

With NHL free agency on the horizon, the Toronto Maple Leafs are looking to improve their roster, and one of their biggest targets has been a Dallas Stars veteran.
Just last week, TSN reporter Chris Johnston revealed that the Toronto Maple Leafs would be taking a serious look at veteran stars in free agency.
One of those names was Jamie Benn of the Dallas Stars, who just wrapped up the final year of a massive contract that had an AAV of $9.5 million.
I think the best approach is if you can take a small step back next year without Mitch Marner. Next year might be a step back. But in summer 2026, there's the possibility for all kinds of stuff league-wide.
I think the most prudent strategy is to patch some of those holes on shorter-term deals - whether that's chasing a Marchand, a Patrick Kane, a Jamie Benn, Claude Giroux maybe. Let's see who actually hits the market.

Unfortunately for the Leafs, it would appear as though their fortunes pertaining to Benn have run thin.
Is Jamie Benn signing with the Toronto Maple Leafs?
According to a new report from Elliotte Friedman on '32 Thoughts,' the Dallas Stars have every intention of bringing back Jamie Benn this summer.
Considering Benn has spent his entire career with the Dallas Stars, it would not surprise us if he decided to come back and retire in Texas.
Throughout Benn's career, he has played in 1192 games and has amassed a total of 956 points. This included 399 goals. He is close to two major milestones: 400 goals and 1000 points.
However, the Leafs may not be missing out here. Benn had just three points in 18 playoff games this postseason.
Furthermore, he had 16 goals, and 49 points last season, which tells us he is on the decline. Simply put, the Leafs can do without him, even if he is a solid veteran presence.
There are plenty of other veteran guys available, including the likes of Brad Marchand and Patrick Kane, who might just be better fits at this stage.
