For years, the NHL salary cap had been stagnant, but now it is starting to rise again, and a new report suggests that teams like the Toronto Maple Leafs are about to benefit.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and its complications to the business side of things, the NHL was unable to increase the salary cap for several years, despite rising broadcast revenue.
Thankfully, things are starting to change, as the salary cap went from $88 million to $95 million this season. Furthermore, next year, the cap is set to go up to $105 million.
Salary cap discussions are ongoing, and with the new CBA intact, there have been conversations about what the cap might look like in a decade from now.

NHL salary cap increase benefits the Toronto Maple Leafs

According to Marco D'Amico of RG.org, in nine years from now, the league is looking to take a huge swing that will rival the salary caps in other major sports.
In fact, the cap may almost double to an impressive $170 million. This would allow for some pretty massive pay raises, as well as the creation of super teams.
Per RG.org:
It's important to note that sources believe the salary cap could almost double over the next 9 years (going from $95M to possibly $170M), making the value of long-term deals much less appealing to top players looking to maximize earnings.

One team that could easily benefit from this is the Toronto Maple Leafs, who already have some big contracts on their roster. This Summer, they want to go after Connor McDavid, which would be $17 million per season against the cap.
Having $170 million to play with would be massive. Of course, every team would be on the same playing field. However, when you're a franchise like the Leafs, you are expected to spend money and compete.
Only time will tell what the salary cap looks like in a few years from now. If one thing is for certain, it is that the Leafs have a huge opportunity in front of them.
