Toronto Maple Leafs prospect has his contract terminated
The Toronto Maple Leafs and Boston Bruins are set to meet tonight in a pivotal game 4. With the Leafs trailing 2-1 in the series, this game becomes as close to a must win as possible. Ahead of the game there is some roster news about a Toronto Maple Leafs' prospect.
Today it was announced that Maple Leafs prospect Nikita Grebyonkin has officially had his contract terminated by KHL club, Metallurg Magnitogorsk. This comes just days after Metallurg won the league championship.
Metallurg Magnitogorsk have terminated a contract with 20 y.o. forward Nikita Grebyonkin on mutual agreement.
Grebyonkin was already in the final year of his KHL deal, so why terminate his deal? By terminating his deal, Metallurg has allowed Grebyonkin to become eligible to sign his entry level contract immediately. Signing this deal now would allow Grebyonkin to potentially play playoff games for the Leafs this spring if called upon.
In 67 games this season Grebyonkin had 19 goals and 22 assists. However, like is often the case, after turning down a contract extension, Grebyonkin saw his ice time significantly dwindle as it appeared he was receiving a punishment for his interest in North America.
Rumors have swirled for days that the Leafs wanted to add the 6'2 forward to their roster, but only time will tell when that will be.
