UFA defenceman Chris Tanev to sign with Toronto Maple Leafs
The Toronto Maple Leafs have been in the market for an effective right-handed defenceman for a while now and were believed to be interested in free agent Christopher Tanev at this past season's trade deadline before he was dealt to to Dallas Stars.
While the addition of Tanev wasn't possible at the deadline it would appear that the 6'4 193lb thirty-four-year-old may be on the verge of joining Toronto as early as Monday when free agency opens.
While there are concerns about Tanev who has not been able to complete a full eighty-two game schedule since the 2021-2022 season due to injuries, the addition of him could be the boost the Maple Leafs sorely need on their back end, but at the right price & term.
If Tanev does indeed sign a deal with Toronto, it signals a shift in what the Maple Leafs have been able to acquire. A heavy-handed, right-shot defenceman is another piece that could make the Maple Leafs more successful and has the potential to push them further than they've been in the last eight years. It would be advisable for Maple Leafs fans not to hold their breath, but at least there could be hope.
