Elias Pettersson's future in Vancouver is up in the air, and now a shock proposal from Jeff Marek sees him reunite with a former teammate on the New York Islanders.
The Vancouver Canucks struggled mightily in 2024/25, and with the drama surrounding Elias Pettersson, it doesn't appear as though he's in the good graces with the fans or the organization at this point in time.
While he has a no-movement clause that kicks in on July 1st, the expectation is that the team could still consider a blockbuster trade, especially if it nets them a star down the middle.
Now, Jeff Marek has explored that exact idea, proposing a blockbuster deal on his latest show, revealing that he'd love to see the team try and acquire Mat Barzal by using EP40 and sending him to Long Island.
"Barzal to Vancouver for Elias Pettersson. Pettersson-Horvat up the gut."
On paper, that's a deal that works for Vancouver, but for New York, it doesn't make too much sense, something that ESPN's Greg Wyshynski noted when addressing Marek and the trade.
"You're rebuilding the 2023 Canucks."
For Vancouver, it would net them an explosive young star that's underperformed in his career with the Islanders, and even if Vancouver added to that deal, it's potentially not something they'd want to explore.
However, with the change in the front office, the Islanders could be looking to shake things up, and knowing that Pettersson is a 100-point player when he's at his best, this may not be the most farfetched idea we've seen this off-season so far.
Ultimately, it's unlikely that Vancouver deal Pettersson, as they'd be selling low on one of their top assets after struggling for much of the last season, but if they can get EP40 back to his best, there's a chance they look to revisit trade talks down the line.
