Alex Ovechkin's NHL career is quickly coming to an end, and now, the Capitals have confirmed that 2025/26 will be the final NHL season from The Great 8.
This past season was a historic one for the Washington Capitals and Alex Ovechkin, as they clinched the No. 1 seed in the Eastern Conference while their captain became the NHL's all-time leading goal scorer, surpassing Wayne Gretzky in the process.
However, he will be 40-years of age before the 2025/26 campaign begins, and as it is his final year under contract with the team, many expected him to retire following the year rather than extending his time in the NHL.
Now, we have our first bit of confirmation on Ovechkin's future, as this email was sent out to Capitals season ticket holders, confirming that next season will be a farewell tour for The Great 8.
This comes after a long and incredibly fruitful career for the Capitals leader, as he has spent two decades in Washington as their captain and the face of the franchise, finding immense success during that span both individually for Ovi and as a team.
It's unclear at this point in time what the Capitals have planned to farewell their franchise superstar, but after so long and so many memories, it's safe to say that this will be an incredibly emotional time for not only Capitals fans but so many around the league.
At 40-years of age however, it's time for Ovi to hang up the skates, and while he may or may not return to Russia and play a year or two in the KHL, we now know that his time in the NHL is all but over, so get ready to bid farewell to an icon next season.
It has now been confirmed by several sources within the Capitals organization that this hasn't been sent out to Capitals season ticket holders, and while there's a chance that Ovechkin's career wraps up after the 2025/26 campaign, at this point it has not been confirmed or advertised by the organization.
