On Friday night, all eyes were on Washington D.C. as the Washington Capitals took on the Chicago Blackhawks, with Alex Ovechkin just two goals back of tying Wayne Gretzky for the most goals in NHL history, with the Capitals star refusing to break the record in the dying moments of the game.
Unsurprisingly, with his natural shot that's been so lethal for the entirety of his career, The Great 8 grabbed not one but two goals, with the second tying Wayne Gretzky for most all-time, with The Great One in attendance to witness the feat.
What's even more stunning is that he made it to 894 goals in exactly one less game than Gretzky, and in front of a home crowd, who showered him with all the love and adulation that he clearly deserves.
However, perhaps the best moment of the night game from the Capitals themselves, who had mic'd up their veteran captain, and when he scored that 894th goal, his teammates went crazy as they celebrated the man we've all come to know and love for the past two decades.
While some players have made NHL history without the love and adoration of the fans and their teammates, Friday night showed that Ovechkin has both, and with history now on the horizon, Sunday night on Long Island against the New York Islanders will be one of the most must-see games in NHL history.
