Another top prospect decides not to sign in the NHL
Washington Capitals first round pick from 2023, Ryan Leonard had his rookie season at Boston College end in heartbreak as his Eagles were shut out 2-0 by the Denver Pioneers in the 2024 National Championship game on Saturday.
With Leonard's season now over, Capitals fans were excited at the prospect of Leonard turning pro. Unfortunately, Washington fans will need wait as Leonard has made the decision to return to college for his sophomore season.
Capitals President and General Manager Brian Maclellan released the following statement supporting Leonard's decision.
"Ryan Leonard indicated his desire to return for his sophomore season at Boston College. We support Ryan's decision to return to one of the best programs in the nation to continue his development," MacLellan said. "Ryan showed great leadership and made tremendous progress during his first year, which saw him score the most goals by a freshman in Boston College program history and the third-most goals in the NCCAA. We will continue to monitor his development and progress next year and look forward to watching Ryan build upon his successful freshman season."
The 19 year old, scored 31 goals and 60 points in 41 games for Boston College. Leonard can return to college to continue to grow and mature without the pressure of turning pro. Leonard won gold for USA at the World Juniors earlier this year, and will be looking to win it all in college after coming so close this time around.
