The Winnipeg Jets know at the end of the 2023-24 National Hockey League season, their team is going to look a lot different. With key players already having made the decision that they won't re-sign with the jets next summer, it appears that one of them has set their price heading into free agency next year.
According to Pierre LeBrun of TSN, Connor Hellebuyck has set his price going into free agency next year, along with his preferred contract length; take a look, it might be a little less than you would think.
LeBrun says Hellebuyck is looking for max term with an AAV of around 9.5 million dollars a season. This seems to be around the going rate for Vezina Calibre goaltenders these days. The problem with this is, his current deal ends when he's 31 and if you sign him to a max extension worth that value, you'd have to watch out for a serious regression in the later part of the deal.
Hellebuyck went 35-25-2 with 4 shutouts a .920 save percentage and a 2.49 goals against average across 64 games played with the Jets last year.
The 9.5 price tag seems to be a little high based on the fact that he's looking for a max contract. I'm sure a team is willing to pay that though, and who knows, the salary cap may go up next summer as well, but paying a 31 year old 9.5 until he's 39 is a tough pill to swallow.
