Elias Salomonsson, a second round pick of the Winnipeg Jets, has had a very short opening day at the World Junior Hockey Championships. He's been booted from the game between Sweden and Latvia following a hit just 25 seconds into the game.
Not much argument on this one. Salomonsson had plenty of time to see that he was hitting someone directly in the numbers, and did it anyway.
Officials took time to review the initial five-minute call, and decided it was appropriate, and that meant Salomonsson was sent to the showers. In fact, he'll be lucky not to end up with a suspension on this one. The defenceman, who is 19 years old, currently plays for Skelleftea of the Swedish Hockey League (SHL).
