The Capitals officially placed Ovechkin on injured reserve today, listing him as week-to-week.
This is devastating news for Capitals fans. Not only is the 39-year-old chasing down the all-time goal record, but he was red hot prior to the injury, scoring five goals in his last two games.
He even had two goals in the game against Utah before suffering the gruesome injury.
Below is an extended look at the play that knocked him out of the game.
As previously stated, the Capitals have the great eight listed as week-to-week. However, NHL insider Kevin Weekes believes it may be worse than that.
How do you get worse than week-to-week? Being out month-to-month or longer.
If Weekes is correct, we could very well see Ovechkin miss a serious number of games this season.
Obviously, this would hurt his chances of breaking the goal record this season. Ovechkin is currently just 26 goals away from tying and 27 away from breaking the record.
Understandably, Capitals fans are devastated by the injury. Not only is Ovechkin on the verge of history, but he is also the team's most important player, even at the age of 39.
Hopefully, Ovechkin will be able to recover from this injury faster than Weekes thinks.
That being said, recovery takes longer the older you get and Ovi is one of the oldest players in the league.
This does not bode well for him or the Capitals, who have historically struggled without him. Be sure to tune in for updates on Ovechkin's status as they come in.
