The 2028 World Cup of Hockey just got a lot more real, with the NHL revealing Calgary, Edmonton, and Prague as host cities on Monday.
That's a big swing from where this event sat a few months ago, when league officials were still talking about one North American host city and one European host city for the tournament.
Now the picture is sharper. Alberta lands two major stops, and Prague gives the event a true European stage in one of hockey's best markets.
The reveal instantly gives the 2028 tournament more identity than it had even during the Olympic buildup.
Calgary and Edmonton were already gaining steam as serious contenders. A joint Alberta push had surfaced earlier this month, and the league's announcement makes it clear that bid carried real weight.
That matters because this event is supposed to be more than a quick international showcase. The NHL and NHLPA have framed the 2028 World Cup as a tentpole best-on-best tournament, part of a longer international calendar that also includes the Olympics.
The scale of it backs that up. The league previously said the tournament is expected to feature 8 nations, last 12 days, and include 17 games.
Alberta just grabbed the hockey spotlight
For Calgary, this is a major hockey event tied to a city that already lives and breathes the sport. For Edmonton, it's another chance to put one of the league's loudest buildings and deepest fan bases in front of the international game. Prague brings history, atmosphere, and instant credibility on the European side.
There's also a rivalry angle here that jumps off the page. Calgary and Edmonton usually don't share the same lane on hockey matters, yet for this event they've become partners on one of the biggest stages the sport can offer.
And from a fan standpoint, the reveal gives the tournament something it badly needed: texture. Not just a logo and a date on the calendar, but real cities, real buildings, and real travel plans starting to take shape.
The next wave will be all about format details, venue breakdowns, and how the games get split across the three sites. That's where this story moves from buzz to full event mode.
But Monday's reveal was the first true jolt. The World Cup is coming back in February 2028, and now it has host cities that fit the stage.
