Alex DeBrincat not interested in signing a contract extension with the Senators now
The Ottawa Senators acquired Alex DeBrincat from the Chicago Blackhawks at the NHL Draft. The deal sent multiple draft picks to the Blackhawks in exchange for DeBrincat's services. The Senators immediately opened up lines of communication with DeBrincat's representatives on a long-term deal. Unfortunately for Ottawa it appears those talks have gone nowhere.
According to Ian Mendes of TSN, DeBrincat wants to wait and see how things go in Ottawa. That means DeBrincat wants to play out the finally year of his current contract. DeBrincat is in the final year of his 3-year deal which pays him $6,400,000 per season. His next deal is expected to command considerably more money.
Last season with the Blackhawks DeBrincat put up 41 goals and 37 assists for 78 points in 82 games. This was the second time in DeBrincat's career that he has eclipsed the 40 goal mark. Another 40 goal season combined with the increase in the salary cap could shoot DeBrincat's salary into the $10,000,000+ per year conversation.
With all their high paid players could DeBrincat price himself out of Ottawa after only one season?
