Bill Guerin makes difficult decision about the Minnesota Wild's top prospect's future
It appears that Minnesota Wild center Marco Rossi is headed back to Iowa in the American Hockey League. Rossi has just one assist in sixteen games with Minnesota this season. Certainly the Wild would like more offensive production from their former first round pick. But Rossi is young and might need some seasoning in the American League. The Austrian center spent most of his time in Iowa last year and he had a good season there. Last year he had fifty-three points in sixty-three games played in Iowa.
It is not uncommon for young high round draft picks to be sent down to the minors. They can get more ice time, develop their game, and gain more confidence. Rossi is just twenty-one years old and still has time to progress into an effective center that the Minnesota needs.
Although this might seem like a step backwards, Rossi's junior coach tells Minnesota fans that there is no need to worry he will be back with the big club again. It is not an easy transition being a regular in an NHL lineup. Minnesota clearly has high hopes for Rossi, and he is a part of their future. Let's hope the kid can find his game in the American Hockey League and be ready for his next recall.
