The reports of the demise of the Calgary Flames appear to have been greatly exaggerated. Over the summer, multiple reports surfaced that multiple members of the Flames core were no longer interested in remaining in Calgary. That list of players previously included Mikael Backlund.
While it was initially reported that Backlund was unwilling to sign an extension. It now appears he has had a change of heart. According to Frank Seravalli the Flames and Backlund appear to be closing in on anew deal.
Sounds like #Flames are closing in on a two-year contract extension with Mikael Backlund in the $4.5 million neighborhood. Details being finalized now.
With that, lots of rumblings Backlund will also be next captain in Calgary.
Congrats to Backlund on his new deal. This is a great move for the Flames and could lead to more players wanting to remain in Calgary.
