A Canadian player suiting up in Sweden has found himself with a lengthy suspension after crosschecking an official during a game.

Kyle Topping, a 23-year-old forward from British Columbia, is currently playing for Vasteras IK of HockeyAllsvenskan, Sweden's second tier league. During a game recently , Topping was behind the opponent's net hoping to snag a loose puck, when an official attempted to get out of the way of the play. That's when Topping crosschecked him in the back. He's been suspended for five games, and has been given a fine.

For his part, Topping said he doesn't even remember the incident and assumes he thought the official was a player.

"To be honest I have no recollection of the play at all, I didn't find out till after the game on the bus home, when one of the guys saw it on Twitter. I would never intentionally harm or push a referee on purpose, I have the utmost respect for what they do. Judging by the video I must have accidentally thought he was an opposing player and gave him a shove."
