Chicago Blackhawks announce veteran player to miss months after cervical surgery
Last season the Chicago Blackhawks battled multiple injuries and this season is already starting off in a similar manner. Today the Blackhawks announced they will not have Jake McCabe in the lineup when the season begins, as he recently underwent cervical spine surgery and will be out for 10-12 weeks. McCabe is entering the second season of a four-year, $16MM contract he signed in 2021. Prospect Jalen Luypen will also be out for 14-18 weeks after suffering a rotator cuff injury.
McCabe is no stranger to the injured reserve, spending lengthy periods on the IR during his playing career. This includes a knee issue that took almost all of 2020-21 and limited his play early last season. McCabe suited up for 75 games for the Blackhawks, setting a career-high with 22 points while averaging more than 20 minutes a night.
He said in April he was
"pretty unhappy"
with how his first Hawks season went, particularly from a team perspective."Yeah, it sucks," he said, "But I'm committed to helping turn this thing around here and continuing to work my butt off every night and trying to help us find a culture and identity here."
Having McCabe out until December only helps Chicago's season goal of "Tanking for Bedard."
