During a game in the Finnish Elite League yesterday, TUTO Hockey's head coach Jonne Virtanen was not happy with a crosschecking call made on one of his players, and took out his frustration by tossing whatever he could find into the ice. There were water bottles, what looked like ripped up pieces of plastic, and a hockey stick, which was broken over the boards before being thrown on the ice. Virtanen was ejected from the game, while the officials were left to pick up the debris.
Virtanen has been suspended three games for the outburst. He has the right to appeal, but the league's disciplinary officer can extend the suspension, as well as shorten it or keep it the same.
Virtanen played pro hockey in Finland for several years before retiring and being made a coach for the 2023-24 season. He was well-known for dropping the gloves during his playing days.
