The Montreal Canadiens got the win they need on home ice against the Calgary Flames 2-1 in the shootout. Last night. Montreal did lose star winger Cole Caufield early in the second period. As Calgary Flames center Mikael Backlund was making his way towards the net, he shot the puck, and the rebound came out in front of Canadiens goalie Jake Allen.
Caufield, who was responsibly backchecking on the play, picked up the rebound. However, he did not see Trevor Lewis skating at full stride towards him. Lewis dropped Caufield right to the ice with a clean legal collision. Caufield did not get up right away. After a few moments he was able to get back to his feet and skate to the locker room.
Caufield made the right play by clearing the puck away from his own net, but he never saw Trevor Lewis coming. The Canadiens are calling Caufield's injury an upper body injury. Hopefully his injury is not severe. The Canadiens count on Caufield for offensive production, and it would be a huge loss if he is out any extended period of time. Let's hope Caufield can bounce back quickly and return to the Canadiens lineup.
