In May there will be a new hockey fighting league starting in Edmonton, Alberta. The league will be named «Ice Wars» and there is a familiar person involved.
There are no sticks, there are no pucks, there are no nets. So yes, it's full hockey gear and it will predominantly be current hockey players. But it's prize fighting with a purse on the line.
The president of "Ice Wars" is A.J. Galante who gained notoriety as the teenage General Manager of the Danbury Trashers. The story of the Galantes and the Trashers was so absurd that a Netflix documentary was made about them.
Fighters will wear 4-ounce MMA gloves and aren't allowed to intentionally tear off an opponent's helmet. Fights will be two one-minute rounds and in the event the bout is tied there will be a 30-second «ice breaker» to determine the winner.
There will be no National Hockey League players involved. Ice Wars will debut with an eight-man 'King of the Rink' heavyweight tournament in Edmonton on May 21st.
