Yesterday morning the President of the Boston Bruins, Cam Neely spoke to the media in Boston. During the press conference he expressed remorse for the signing of Mitchell Miller and he also detailed that the franchise had parted ways with the defenseman. This information appears to be slightly misleading and in contrast to the NHL's policy on terminating contracts.

On Friday, Miller's contract was formalized and registered with the NHL. This in turn made Miller both a member of the NHL and the NHLPA. At the time of the signing and registration the NHL had no qualms with the signing, allowing the deal to process without issue.

Now multiple reports have surfaced contradicting what Neely has stated.

From what I'm told, in order to void the Mitchell Miller contract, the Bruins will have to place him on waivers. If he goes unclaimed, which he will, the Bruins will then terminate. If that happens, the NHLPA has 60 days to decide whether or not to file a grievance.

As of right now, the Bruins have not officially cut ties with Mitchell Miller.

They would have to place him on waivers for purpose of contract termination.

If they do that -- could be as soon as 2 p.m. today -- the NHLPA would have 60 days to file a grievance.

Yesterday many expected the Bruins to place Miller on waivers at 2 pm, but that was not the case. The only two players placed on waivers were forward Rem Pitlick and goaltender Dylan Wells.

So as of this writing it appears that Miller is still a member of the Boston Bruins, that is unless the NHL has found some loophole that would allow the team to terminate the deal without penalty. This is a situation that is already messy enough without these additional details. It will be interesting to see if the Bruins place Miller on waivers today or if they will choose to go another route.
