Moments ago, NHL insider Elliotte Friedman broke the news that the Edmonton Oilers have fired head coach Jay Woodcroft.
The move comes as the Oilers have seriously struggled to start the season, with a record of 3-9-1 including a loss the one of the worst teams in recent memory, the San Jose Sharks. The Oilers are now only two points out of last place, an egregious record for a team with Connor McDavid in his prime. With their ability to contend for a Stanley Cup coming into question, the team is making the coaching change to try to spark anything.
Woodcroft finishes his tenure with the Oilers coaching in parts of 3 seasons. In 133 games coached, he ends his tenure with a record of 79-41-13. Whoever takes over will have a big hill to climb and will also mark the 5th coach of the Connor McDavid era.
