The Auston Matthews contract negotiations with the Toronto Maple Leafs have been a hot topic of discussion through the off-season as he's projected to make somewhere between 13 and 14 million per season on his next contract. As such, it seems like players around the league are waiting for him to put pen to paper before they sign their next deals.
Take Elias Pettersson for example, according to Harman Dayal of The Athletic, Pettersson is one of the players that is believed to be waiting for Matthews to set the market for superstars before beginning to negotiate his next deal; take a look.
Pettersson is entering the last year of a three year extension he signed before the 2021 season and he is expecting Matthews to drive up the market price for players like him.
Pettersson, 24, played in 80 games for the Canucks last season collecting 39 goals and adding 63 assists for a total of 102 points last season.
While Matthews is going to set the market, it's going to have a dangerous ripple effect around the league
