Teams continue to use the NHL's waiver wire to try and improve their franchise. In this case it appears that Pierre Dorion is using the waiver wire to get Nikita Zaitsev away from DJ Smith, a coach who absolutely loves to play him, despite his negative impacts. Today three players have been placed on waivers according to Chris Johnston.

Placed on NHL waivers today: Mike Reilly (BOS), Nikita Zaitsev (OTT) and Magnus Hellberg (OTT).

The Senators acquired Zaitsev from the Toronto Maple Leafs in the Dion Phaneuf trade and Zaitsev had been a key part of the Sens defense since. Unfortunately though Zaitsev's play has fallen off to the point that he is virtually unplayable. This season alone the Senators are 0-7-0 with Zaitsev in the lineup.

As for Mike Reilly, the Boston Bruins had previously placed Reilly on waivers earlier this year. Reilly went unclaimed, but it was reported that the Montreal Canadiens were very high on claiming him, but couldn't create the cap space. Reilly has played in 10 games this season for the Bruins, but it is expected that Charlie MacAvoy will make his return tomorrow and the Bruins needed to create a roster spot for the defender.
