A passionate hockey coach is nothing new. Some of them can be more passionate than players depending on the situation. But, there has to be a line, and it was crossed during a recent game.
With his team down 3-1 in the final minutes, Christian Wohlwend, head coach of HC Ajoie in the Swiss National League, lost it on the coach of the opposing team, Fribourg-Gottéron. Wohlwend made crying faces at his opponent, while also making fun of his hair and clothes while calling him a "f--king clown."
Wohlend received a two-minute unsportsmanlike conduct penalty during the game. He's since been fined the equivalent of $5800 USD. Still, he seems adamant this wasn't entirely his fault, and that the opposing coach was just as bad.
"Emotions took over, but there was no negative intention behind the behavior. Unfortunately, the video does not show the behavior of Christian Dubé. Both of us were shouting and insulting each other, but unfortunately only I can be seen in the video images. The opposing coach also crossed a line."
Wohlend is on his third team in the National League has head coach, having previously been employed by Lugano, and HC Davos.
