Insider reveals Luke Schenn was tampered with by another team and will leave the Maple Leafs

The NHL's free agent window is set to open today at noon. While in the past the NHL had implemented a negotiation window where teams could speak to free agents, but in the last few years the league has ended that window. Despite not having permission to speak to players, the league is notorious for having deals signed right at noon when the window opens.

Any conversation with a player from another team with a free agent who isn't their own is defined by the league as tampering. However, nothing usually comes of it.

The Toronto Maple Leafs have been trying very hard to sign Luke Schenn to a contract extension since the season ended. Both parties had mutual interest in getting a deal done, but nothing ever came together. Today Inside revealed why no deal came together.

It doesn't appear likely that Luke Schenn will be returning to the #leafs. There was mutual interest in continuing the relationship, but it's believed the level of interest in the veteran defenceman has produced a hefty offer elsewhere.

It this point it hasn't been reported that the Maple Leafs granted Schenn permission to speak to another team. If the Leafs never granted Schenn permission to speak to other teams they could certainly file a tampering charge with the league.
