Insider reveals why Nic Hague refuses to report to Vegas, the salary cap is to blame
The regular season for the Vegas Golden Knights is Tuesday night against the Los Angeles Kings. The Golden Knights will still have to make due without the services of restricted free agent Nicolas Hague. Hague and the Golden Knights have been at a stalemate since the summer. So much so that Hague went back to his hometown in Ontario and has been skating with the Kitchener Rangers.
You would think both Vegas and Hague would have liked to have this matter resolved by the time the season started. Reports indicate that Hague is looking for around 2 per million season for two years. That really works out to be a reasonable request for a reliable defender and one most teams can accommodate. However Vegas continues to be plagued with salary cap issues. Their inability to have flexible spending has hampered who Vegas can sign and what roster moves they make. Until the Golden Knights can get this sorted out or put some other players on long-term injured reserve, it appears Hague's contract will have to wait.
The Vegas Golden Knights have been known to make bold moves even though the franchise is still quite young. Perhaps they've been too aggressive at times. Not all their deals have panned out, they've traded away a significant amount of prospects and picks, and they are well above the salary cap. Maybe in the future, they learn from their past mistakes. Let's hope Vegas can get cap compliant so they can get sign Nicolas Hague and get him back on the ice. They'd be a better team with Hague in the lineup.
