Miller has said in the past that he wanted to be a Canuck long-term and this certainly proves it. Let's take a look at how his contract is laid out in terms of base salary versus signing bonuses. Players nowadays seem to want front-loaded contracts with a rather sizeable signing bonus to start each season rather than a larger in-season base in-season salary.
According to Puck Empire, over 20 million of Miller's 56 million dollar deal comes in the form of signing bonuses, which are usually due on the first day of free agency each off-season.
At the age of 29, signings a long-term extension only made sense for Miller, couple that with the large portion due in signing bonuses and it seems as if `he may be lining his before the inevitable drop in production as he ages.
While this deal may look good for the first few seasons, I have a feeling this contract is going to age like spoiled milk. Miller is coming off a 99-point season in 80 games played last season, but, that bested his career high in points by over 20. the odds of him being able to replicate his point production, especially as he ages is slim-to-none if you ask me.
