Johnny Gaudreau's parents stop playing nice and reveal the actual reason he left Calgary
We all know one of the biggest free agent signings this past off-season was Johnny Gaudreau signing with the Columbus Blue Jackets. A move many did not see coming. Now that the dust has settled, Gaudreau has played well for his new team. Johnny's parents commented that in the summer of 2020/21 he gave Calgary an opportunity to make him an offer.
Gaudreau wanted an eight-year contract at fair market value. Had Calgary made a legitimate offer, it sounds like Gaudreau would have stayed in Calgary. From the Gaudreau's perspective Calgary did offer him a contract and it was apparently not a good offer at all. So much so they called it an embarrassment.
THE SUMMER BEFORE, HAD THEY OFFERED HIM A CONTRACT EVEN REMOTELY CLOSE, [JOHNNY] SAID 'I WOULD HAVE BEEN IN CALGARY FOR EIGHT MORE YEARS, THIS WOULD HAVE BEEN A NON-ISSUE.' WELL, THE FLAMES OFFERED HIM A CONTRACT... IT WASN'T EVEN CLOSE [TO HIS MARKET VALUE]... IT WAS A JOKE. HE WAS REALLY, REALLY EMBARRASSED.
It sounds like there still might be hard feelings between the Gaudreau family and the Calgary organization. Sometimes contract negotiations end up that way. It seems a little odd that his parents are commenting on the situation and not Johnny himself. However, Gaudreau spent nine years in Calgary and played very well for them. It is easy to see why there are hard feelings being expressed.
At the end of the day, it did not work out in Calgary. Gaudreau did get the monster contract he was looking for and he's playing a lot closer to home now which was something important to him. As the season progress, both the player and the organization will learn to move on.
