Hockey is known as the game of attrition; players play through injuries and get banged up day in and day out. It is almost unheard of for players to play an entire season, much less start what is known as an "iron man" streak.
Keith Yandle is the National Hockey League's, iron man. Playing an impressive 989 consecutive games in the NHL to set the record. Yandle last missed a game in 2008 while the Arizona Coyotes were still in Phoenix. However, according to Bill Meltzer of NHL.com and Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet, Yandle's iron man streak could be in jeopardy as he is under the weather right now.
Yandle, 35, has 1 goal and 14 assists in all 67 games for the Flyers thus far this season. As noted above, Mike Yeo, the head coach of the Flyers, was very non-committal about the veteran defenceman's status for tomorrow's game. Still, there may be discussions about him sitting some games out down the stretch in favour of some younger guys to get them more experience on the back end.
Opinion: While Iron Man streaks are sporadic and a remarkable feat if you can stay healthy for a long time, I don't think such importance should be placed on them, especially if the player isn't performing, but that's just me. At any rate, if this is how Yandle's historic streak ends, I genuinely feel for him.
