Prior to the 2021 NHL Draft, the highly-touted prospect Logan Mailloux was placed on many team's do not draft lists after Mailloux himself asked not to be drafted following an incident wherein he took and distributed photos of a sexual interaction without the consent of the partner.

Despite this scandal and his own renunciation of being drafted that year, Mailloux was selected by the former Habs GM Marc Bergervin late in the first round. The decision to select Mailloux was criticized throughout the NHL, even the Québécois government and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. Mailloux was then suspended from the OHL, from the begging of the season until January 1st of 2022.

Now under new management with Kent Hughes, the Montreal Canadiens are currently unwilling to sign Mailloux. GM Hughes commented yesterday that the club is still evaluating Mailloux as a person, and will continue to do so before even beginning contract negotiations.

No, no intention to negotiate a contract right now. He's still in evaluation as a person not a player.

With many recent sexual abuse scandals in the NHL being swept under the rug and not being held accountable, it's encouraging to see the Canadiens' new management take promoting a different culture more seriously. The price to them will be not signing one of their top prospects, but also will be building a much better culture of accountability in Montreal.
