Kyle Dubas has established a reputation as being a push over by agents, whether that's deserved or not is extremely debatable. Rewinding back, negotiating through the media worked for both Mitch Marner and William Nylander. So there is no surprise that Rasmus Sandin's agent, Lewis Gross has turned to similar tactics.
On Wednesday morning, Gross informed the media that the Maple Leafs and Sandin were not close. On a phone call with the team at Sportsnet, Gross shared the following:
While this simple quote doesn't say much, it does put the Maple Leafs at a disadvantage. Any team willing to offer Rasmus Sandin a 1-year deal at under $4,200,000 would be able to acquire the defender for a 2nd round pick as compensation. This quote on its own opens up the Leafs to be vulnerable to a potential offer sheet.
It's clear Kyle Dubas is unhappy, but at this time Sandin remains behind Morgan Rielly, Jake Muzzin and Mark Giordano on the depth chart. It's difficult to see Dubas and the Leafs caving to young player with under 100 games of NHL experience.
