Before there was Matthew Knies the Toronto Maple Leafs had another second round prospect Nick Robertson that had fans drooling with his possible potential. The shine has dulled on Robertson since being drafted 53rd overall during the 2009 NHL draft.

A litany of injuries has stopped Robertson from reaching his full potential. In the 2021-22 season, Robertson suffered a non-displaced fracture of his right fibula in 2021-22. The season before that, he had a knee injury in his 2020-21 debut. A concussion and groin injuries have also occurred along the way. The latest was a shoulder injury suffered in December which requires surgery.

The 21 year old got into 15 games for the Maple Leafs last season scoring 2 goals and 5 points while averaging 10:53 in ice time.

Robertson sat down with TSN's Mark Masters to give an interview:

Robertson gave his take on his injury luck and what he needs to improve on to be an everyday NHL player.

"It's frustrating, obviously isn't the start to the pro career that I wanted but it is what it is, like I said the show goes on I have to do my part to get ready for the season. Getting ready to make the Leafs. That has been my main focus since the injury. When I got the surgery in January, I knew from that point on it was time to prepare myself for the next season. To look over fil, to look over areas where I can improve on."

"I am a very fast base player. I need to pick and choose when to use it. When to slow it down or speed up off the wall. Using my skating ability to use my shot which is what I want to do.»

Robertson has shown he has the speed and shot to beat NHL goaltenders. He will be a RFA next summer after his entry level contract expires. The 2023-2024 season will go along way in determining the next step of Robertson's career.
