Maple Leafs looking to extend three players in the near future
The Toronto Maple Leafs season didn't end the way anyone wanted, that much is clear, but falling in a very competitive 7 game series to the back-to- back defending cup is nothing to sneeze at. I know some of you will say «results matter, they didn't get it done» and you would also be correct. I'm not here to gate keep how fans feel, just simply choosing to stay optimistic about the off-season ahead.
One area the leafs saw tremendous development in had good be on defence, with the emergence of Rasmus Sandin and Timothy Liljegren. Both defenders are young and we're in the last year of their entry level deals and it sounds like both will be back on a bridge type contract, according to sports nets Elliotte Friedman.
Honestly, if both Sandin and Lily receive lower value short term deals I wouldn't be mad at it. Especially Liljegren, who really started thriving being on an isolated third pair with Mark Giordano upon his arrival in Toronto.
Speaking of Gio, Friedman also suggested that the veteran defensive rearguard could take a team friendly deal that sees him back in a Maple leaf uniform next season as well. If you ask me, continued development for Sandin and Lily under a guy like Gio would make too much sense.
I think Giordano will likely be back at a lower number.
Time will tell though, the Leaf off-season is in full swing.
